Is the AIP-C01 Worth It? Difficulty, Prerequisites, and Who Should Take It
August 13, 20266 min read
An honest look at the AWS Certified Generative AI Developer - Professional (AIP-C01): who it is for, how hard it is, what to know first, and whether it is worth the cost.
Who this exam is for
AIP-C01 targets engineers who ship generative-AI systems on AWS: RAG pipelines, agents, and foundation-model integrations in production. It is not a management or awareness credential. If your job is to design and operate these systems, it maps directly to your work.
How hard it is
It is a professional-tier exam and the hardest of the AWS AI certifications. The passing score is 750 out of 1000, higher than the 700 used by the foundational exam, and the questions are scenario-based: you are given a production constraint and asked for the best design, not a definition.
The exam has 65 scored questions plus 10 unscored, in 170 minutes, and costs $300.
What to know before you sit it
AWS recommends about two years building production applications on AWS or with open-source tools, general AI/ML or data-engineering experience, and one year of hands-on generative AI. Model training, advanced ML, and feature engineering are explicitly out of scope, so you can skip those.
AIF-C01 or AIP-C01 first?
If you are newer to AWS AI, start with AIF-C01. It builds the vocabulary - foundation models, prompting, responsible AI - that AIP-C01 assumes you already have. If you already build generative-AI systems day to day, you can go straight to AIP-C01.
Is it worth the cost?
For a builder, yes: it is a durable, professional-level signal in a field crowded with foundational badges, and the study itself sharpens skills you use in production. For a non-builder, the foundational AIF-C01 is the better fit.
Frequently asked questions
